FAQ

How can I get my pet ready for surgery?
Most pets will need to fast the evening before their procedure, and in some cases water may also be limited. Your veterinarian may advise pausing certain medications and will provide detailed pre-surgery instructions tailored to your pet. It’s also helpful to prepare a calm, cozy area at home where your pet can recover comfortably.
For common procedures such as spays and neuters, pets are often able to return home the same day. More advanced surgeries or situations that require close monitoring may call for an overnight stay. Your veterinary team will let you know what to expect based on your pet’s specific needs.
In most cases, yes. Surgical incisions are typically closed with sutures. Some stitches dissolve on their own, while others need to be removed about 10–14 days after surgery. You’ll receive instructions on how to care for the incision site, and an e-collar (cone) may be recommended to prevent licking or chewing.
After surgery, your pet will need:

  • A quiet, low-traffic area to rest and heal
  • Pain medication and any prescribed antibiotics given exactly as instructed
  • Limited activity—short, controlled leash walks only, with no running, jumping, or rough play
  • Close monitoring for signs like swelling, discharge, lethargy, vomiting, or difficulty breathing
  • Scheduled follow-up appointments to check healing and remove sutures if needed

Orthopedic surgeries, including TPLO, generally require about 8–12 weeks of recovery time. The first few weeks focus on strict rest and proper pain control. As healing progresses, your veterinarian may introduce gradual rehabilitation such as controlled leash walks, strengthening exercises, or water therapy. Follow-up visits and imaging help ensure everything is healing as expected.
